FEMSA creates environmental value through clean energy, recycling and reforestation

Mexico City, Mexico. June 5, 2019. – FEMSA and its Business Units seek to create environmental value through its sustainability strategy, which is guided by its commitment to its people, the planet and the communities where they are present. In the company there are several sustainability initiatives that can be framed in the theme of this years World Environment Day: Air Pollution.

Currently, FEMSA promotes the use of clean energy. During 2018 it achieved that 37% of the energy used in its operations, as well as that of its Business Units in Mexico, came from renewable sources. In this sense, during 2018 more than 600 pharmacies, more than 6,100 OXXO stores, 15 manufacturing plants and 53 distribution centers were supplied with renewable energy.

This was possible thanks to wind farms such as the Amistad Wind Farm, inaugurated in November 2018 in Coahuila, which generates enough to supply energy to an average of 427,000 homes in Mexico. The companys goal is to have 85% of the electricity demand of its operations in Mexico come from renewable sources by 2020.

Other sustainable actions

In order to contribute to a healthier environment and the increase of green spaces, since 2011 OXXO has planted more than 19 thousand trees in front of its stores. Also, since 2016 launched its campaign “No bag, please. Thank you”, which managed to reduce an equivalent of 386 tons of plastic in 2018 alone. It also offers its customers degradable plastic bags, made with 20 to 30 percent recycled material.

Coca-Cola FEMSA has become a large PET recycler. In 2005, it joined forces to create the Mexican Recycling Industry (IMER in Spanish), the first food grade PET recycling plant in Latin America. Currently 21% of its PET packaging is made with recycled resin and aims to reach 25% by 2020. Additionally, it returns to the environment 100% of the water it uses to produce its beverages in Brazil, Central America, Colombia and Mexico.

The three companies that make up FEMSAs Strategic Businesses Business Unit stand out for their commitment to sustainability. PTM (Plásticos Técnicos Mexicanos) designs, manufactures and recycles plastic products that support operational and marketing strategies; it t also recycles 24 thousand tons of plastic every year and in 2018 managed to have 80% of its products made with recycled materials.

Solistica focuses on the efficient planning of routes to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In the refrigeration business, in the last 10 years Imbera reduced 85% of its refrigerators’ energy consumption.

FEMSA is convinced that social, environmental and economic value are related, so it joins the United Nations in commemorating the World Environment Day, and is committed to carrying out sustainable performances in all its operations.
