Guatemala, September 20, 2021.- The Villa Nueva City Hall, Fundación FEMSA, and Glasswing International—committed to contributing to the quality of life of Villa Nueva’s children and families— inaugurated the remodeling works on the sports field and the multipurpose room of Lomas de Villa Wolves II. This public space has had an investment of Q262,500.

The goal of adapting and rescuing this public space is to contribute to the quality of life of the inhabitants of Lomas de Villa Lobos II, benefiting 5,000 people in the area. It will take inspiration from the Recommendation Guide for Child-Friendly Public Space Design1 promoted by FEMSA Foundation and the crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) focus. Thus, at least 2,000 boys and girls and approximately 800 families have been supported.

The design, which was carried out with the collaboration of people of all ages from Lomas de Villa Lobos II, has a high civic commitment, as it is a space prioritized by members of the community. The works that are being delivered to the population by the institutions are: (1) remodeling court and playground that will include a small urban gym, recreational equipment, furniture (benches and tables), retaining wall, signage, and murals, among others; (2) and a multipurpose room, including refurbished bathrooms and walls, kitchen area, repairment of ceiling and electrical system, painting, and others. The space was inaugurated in this month of September 2021. During the development of the project 125 community volunteers gave their support, as well as civic servants from the program of Strengthening and Integral Support for Young People of the Municipality of Villa Nueva.

The inauguration event was attended by the mayor of Villa Nueva, Javier Gramajo, who emphasized the importance of joint efforts. “It fills me with joy to be at the inauguration of this space, which has been possible thanks to the fact that different actors have joined forces for the good of the population. Starting today, children, youth, women, the elderly and adults will be able to come and enjoy all the benefits that outdoor spaces bring, with special emphasis on the positive aspects of mental health, physical health and quality of life. life”, he said.

Eva Fernández, Early Childhood Social Investment Manager at FEMSA Foundation, said “In addition to human relationships, the environment that surrounds children – their home, but also their neighborhood and their city – will also impact their health, behavior and opportunities they will have to develop throughout their lives. When we design spaces that include girls and boys, we form their understanding of what it means to live in community, we strengthen the social fabric and we build more equitable and just cities”.

FEMSA Foundation and Glasswing International have worked for two consecutive years on projects for the development of children. During 2021, early childhood, childhood and family will be supported with the delivery of food kits and early stimulation that reinforces kinesthetic intelligence (fine and gross motor skills) and spatial intelligence (language and logical thinking). Interventions will also be be carried out in public spaces, counting on the active participation of the community.
