FEMSA highlights the importance of community development for a sustainable future at FIR meeting

Merida, Yucatan; March 26, 2015.– Latin America has not been able to generate the necessary conditions for eradicating poverty or for closing the structural gaps, which prevent reaching an equality of development opportunities.

‘FIR 2015: Enterprise, community, and development’ is a forum promoted by RedEAmerica that looks to ponder how enterprises – together with communities and governments – contribute to environmental care in Latin America while focusing on the sustainable development of the communities.

Since 2009, FEMSA has been a key member of the Mexican Node of the Network alongside organizations like CEMEFI, CEMEX, FEYAC, FUNDEMEX, Holcim Mexico, and the Foundations Haciendas del Mundo Maya, Merced, and ADO, among others. These institutions aim to consolidate the democratic practices and values needed in Latin America for stabilizing a sustainable path for economic growth where the environment – one of the largest assets of the region – obtains the necessary attention.

“FEMSA deems essential driving multi-sectorial alliances that allow the undertaking of actions that positively benefit and transform the communities where every member of the Network has presence. Our participation in this Forum and our collaboration with RedEAmerica aims to strengthen sustainability initiatives by fostering a dialogue with, and learning from, other institutions that, like us, are looking to generate the optimal conditions to produce sustainable communities in Latin America,” said Anik Vares, Manager of Social Sustainability at FEMSA.

FEMSA contributes to the generation of economic, social, and environmental value in the communities where it is present through diverse actions guided by its Sustainability Strategic Framework made up by the Axles Our People, Our Planet, and Our Community. In respect to the dimension of environmental care, we promote the optimization of water use, the quest for achieving energy sustainability in our operations, and the optimization of waste management from our operation in order to decrease the impact caused by every product and service with programs and daily efforts.

The work we perform together with RedEAmerica lets us channel the knowledge and experience of its members and make it available for others. It also generates contact opportunities and associations among entrepreneurial organizations in order to face common challenges, looking for new and better ways to perform social investment that enables putting into practice actions that positively affect Latin American communities.
