FEMSA Comercio Carried Out Hundreds of Community Actions Against COVID and Floods in Tabasco in 2020

Mexico City, Mexico. January 27, 2021. – In 2020, FEMSA Comercio’s businesses carried out more than 700 community actions with a direct investment of more than $ 53 million pesos to face the COVID-19 pandemic and to meet the needs of victims of the floods in Tabasco.

FEMSA Comercio is one of FEMSA’s Business Units, and it is made up of OXXO, OXXO Gas and Farmacias YZA, as well as other companies such as Doña Tota and Bara.

Among the company’s more than 700 actions to fight COVID-19, is the donation of 3.15 million face masks donated by OXXO to public security personnel. Andatti participated as well and, as part of the alliance with Contagia Solidaridad, equipped more than 90 thousand people from the health sector from more than 150 hospitals in Mexico, for a month. OXXO also delivered more than 34,000 groceries to vulnerable communities, the equivalent of 340 tons of food and products to cover basic needs.

OXXO Gas donated 32,000 liters of gasoline to the Mexican Red Cross to help transfer patients from 6 states of the country. YZA Pharmacies, alongside partners and clients, allocated more than 6,800 cans of food to communities in southeastern Mexico, and delivered 12,000 face masks to health personnel.

Doña Tota partnered with the Mexican Food Bank Network to deliver 8.1 tons of product to affected communities, and Bara donated 3,000 personal protection supplies to hospitals in 4 states of Mexico. Donations and coffee discounts were also channeled for medical personnel and personnel of Civil Society Organizations that work on the design and production of respirators.

Through OXXO Customer’s Rounding Program the company joined forces with more than 125 civil society organizations that attend to local needs and projects on issues related to health, food and economic recovery. Similarly, an alliance was created with the Mexican Red Cross, in which 33 OXXO regions launched the “4X1” campaign, in collaboration with FEMSA Foundation, Santander, Coppel and Soriana, where each rounded peso turned into $4. An alliance was also made with the Food Bank, in which 25 regions participated to benefit communities in vulnerable conditions that were strongly affected by the pandemic.

“During 2020, due to the contingency the country is facing due to COVID-19 and to the natural disaster the state of Tabasco suffered, and since it is our conviction to be good neighbors in the communities in which we operate, we joined forces with multisectoral partners and we focused community and volunteer actions on these priority issues,”, said Zuly Silerio, Community Development Manager at FEMSA Comercio.

In actions to support natural disasters, such as the floods in Tabasco, FEMSA Comercio’s volunteers provided assistance to citizens by bringing food, cleaning supplies, and basic necessities such as shoes and clothing. OXXO also delivered 5,000 liters of drinking water to the State’s Civil Protection Department, 8.5 tons of products and food to the most affected communities, donated 7,600 face masks, delivered more than 9,900 hydration products in partnership with state and municipal authorities, and equipped the staff of the local Red Cross delegation with medical supplies.

In order to work together with collaborators, community members and institutions, since 2009 FEMSA Comercio has collaborated in more than 300 community activities with a reach of more than 139,080 beneficiaries annually. These communities are focused on supporting public spaces, the environment, healthy lifestyles, social assistance, education, natural disasters, animal care, among others.

To help provide access to safe water in the context of the flood contingency, FEMSA Foundation, with the support of OXXO, Coca-Cola FEMSA, YZA Pharmacies and Solistica, moved the water purification vehicle ‘Ven por Agua’ (Come get water) to Centla, Tabasco. In this intervention, 21,088 liters of safe water for human consumption and 2,560 kilos of ice were delivered to people from the community of Centla, Tabasco. With its water treatment vehicles, FEMSA Foundation seeks to help shorten distances to meet basic needs and help the recovery of the affected communities.

Coca-Cola FEMSA, alongside the Tabasco Red Cross and the Food Bank, allocated 2,500 food packages to affected families in Tabasco and delivered more than 22,700 liters of Ciel water to shelters in coordination with SEDECO and the State’s Civil Protection Department, as well as the Municipality and DIF of Villahermosa, Tabasco.
