- In Brazil, 100% of operations have resumed at the Porto Alegre plant.
- Over 200,000 liters of water have been donated for climate emergencies in Mexico and Brazil.
Porto Alegre, Brazil -May 09, 2025 – Coca-Cola FEMSA, the world’s largest Coca-Cola System bottler by sales volume, today celebrated the full reopening of its plant in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
This milestone marks a decisive step in the company’s reconstruction efforts in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, following the impact of the May 2024 floods. The reopening ceremony brought together authorities, media representatives, strategic partners, and employees, symbolizing Coca-Cola FEMSA’s resilience and commitment to the region.
“The full reopening of our Porto Alegre plant reflects the incredible resilience, hard work, and collaborative spirit of our entire team and partners. Seeing it operate at full capacity again fills us with deep pride and renews our energy to continue creating the future by serving our communities, especially after the challenges we faced. It’s not just about restoring productive capacity, but also ensuring the well-being of our employees, strengthening our presence, and continuing to actively contribute to the economic and social development of the region, today and in the future,” commented Eduardo Pereyra, Operations Director of Coca-Cola FEMSA in Brazil.
The plant, which gradually resumed operations since the second half of 2024, now operates at 100% capacity, once again offering its full product portfolio to consumers in Rio Grande do Sul.
This recovery was made possible by an ambitious investment plan announced by Coca-Cola FEMSA in 2024, amounting to USD 156 million for Rio Grande do Sul. Of this total, USD 119 million were specifically allocated to the reconstruction and modernization of the Porto Alegre plant, while USD 37 million were invested in various operational improvements in the region.
Since the most critical moments of the floods, Coca-Cola FEMSA Brazil, together with the Coca-Cola System and its partners, demonstrated its strong commitment to service and community support. The company mobilized significant efforts to assist the most affected groups, including:
- Direct support to over 360 affected employees.
- Assistance to 10,000 associated retail establishments.
- Support for nearly 2,000 recyclable material collectors in the region.
- Donation of over USD 264,000 in food and essential goods, through direct contributions and joint initiatives.
- Delivery of 1 million liters of Crystal water to impacted communities.
A Regional Experience of Resilience and Solidarity
Coca-Cola FEMSA’s response to the emergency in Brazil is part of a regional disaster support strategy, developed and strengthened over the years in different countries. In Mexico, for example, the experience gained after Hurricane Otis in 2023 was key to structuring more agile and coordinated responses in similar scenarios.
Following the impact of Otis in Guerrero, Coca-Cola FEMSA, in collaboration with Fundación FEMSA, the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry, and authorities from the three levels of government, implemented a comprehensive assistance plan that included:
- Delivery of over 126,000 liters of bottled water to the most affected communities.
- Activation of two “VenXAgua” water purification vehicles, each capable of processing up to 48,000 liters of purified water daily, in coordination with municipal authorities and the National Guard.
- Distribution of food parcels and hygiene kits to the community and employees, thanks to the efforts of 150 company volunteers.
- Promotion of a fundraising campaign by the Coca-Cola Foundation, aiming to reach half a million pesos, in addition to an initial donation of USD 13,700 for hygiene kits.
The lessons learned in Mexico helped strengthen Coca-Cola FEMSA’s response capabilities in Brazil, ensuring a more effective response to challenges posed by extreme weather events.
In total, the company has donated over 200,000 liters of water for emergencies in Mexico and Brazil, as part of its commitment to water security and humanitarian aid.
With the reopening of the Porto Alegre plant and its ongoing community support actions, Coca-Cola FEMSA not only restores its production capacity but also reaffirms its role as a key player in the recovery and sustainable development of the communities it serves, demonstrating its resilience, its firm dedication to being an agent of positive change, and its commitment to creating the future.
