Community Engagement

Community engagement

Fostering social and cultural development in our communities

Since 1890, we have taken an active role in the social and cultural development of our communities. Whether promoting education, sporting activities, and an appreciation of the arts or encouraging other organizations to do the same, we seek to ensure the well-being and active involvement of people in the communities we serve.

ITESM

FEMSA is proud to be the founding sponsor of Tecnológico de Monterrey, one of Latin America's most important private universities.

Promoting excellence in education

FEMSA has created educational institutions and programs to contribute in the formation of well-prepared citizens who are committed to their country. These efforts are Tecnológico de Monterrey ITESM, Eugenio Garza Sada Award, Rounding-Off Program, Designated Driver Program, Responsible Lifestyle courses, as well as Responsible waiter courses.

Over the past five years alone, we have channeled approximately Ps.400 million (US$30.3 million) to philanthropic, educational, cultural, environmental, and social-welfare institutions. We allocated 90 percent of that amount to educational programs and institutions.

Tecnológico de Monterrey ITESM
We are proud to have been the driving force behind the creation in 1943 of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, also known as Tecnológico de Monterrey (TEC). In its 33 campuses in Mexico, this institution provides education to 96,650 students. TEC is one of the most important private universities in Latin America. We are committed to the continuing sponsorship of TEC's educational excellence begun by former CEO of Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Don Eugenio Garza Sada.

The Eugenio Garza Sada Award
Created in 1993, the Eugenio Garza Sada Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose actions and principles reflect the values that distinguished Eugenio Garza Sada and continue to form the core of FEMSA's corporate principles: work, education, honesty, consistency, and commitment to the economic and social development of Mexico. The award is given annually and includes a cash prize of Ps.250,000 to one organization and Ps. 250,000 to one individual. The Fundación Programa Lazos and Alberto Santos de Hoyos received the award in 2010, both were selected among 100 candidates from 17 states of Mexico.

OXXO PRO Rounding-Off Program

Encouraging individual responsibility

PRO: Rounding-Off Program
Through the Rounding-Off Program of our OXXO Responsibility Program (PRO), we invite OXXO customers to round up their purchases to the next peso for charity. Each quarter FEMSA Comercio gives the proceeds to a different organization. Since its beginning on 2002, PRO has collected economic funds for more than Ps.$339 million beneficiating 877 institutions across more than 59 cities in Mexico.

A strong commitment to cultural development

Bienal Monterrey FEMSA

Bienal Monterrey FEMSA
In 1992, FEMSA founded Bienal Monterrey FEMSA, or Monterrey FEMSA Biennale, one of Mexico's premier art competitions. Held every two years, this Biennale promotes Mexican art and art appreciation through an open competition judged by an international panel of recognized artists and critics. Following a public exhibition of the selected artworks, the Biennale awards a cash prize and a cultural residency at the School of Arts and Design of Saint-Etienne, France sponsored by the Alliance Française. All the artworks that obtain the great prize and the ones that are acquired become a part of the FEMSA Art Collection, internationally recognized as one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary Latin-American art. So far, more than 7,000 artists and 17,000 artworks have been registered, and the exhibitions have been seen by more than 400,000 people nationally.
