More than 90,000 students from the State of Mexico compete in the Recycling Olympics

Tultitlan, State of Mexico, February 19, 2016.– Coca-Cola FEMSA awarded the winners of the Recycling Olympics ¡I Recycle!, in which more than 90,000 students participated and managed to collect more than 114 tons of PET. This contributes to promoting a culture of recycling and to raise awareness of the importance of emptying, crushing, covering and depositing the PET bottles in containers or garbage cans to be properly processed.

Students from more than 300 educational institutions, from kindergarten through university, participated during the Recycling Olympics ¡I recycle! The students of each institution worked together to collect as much PET as possible in order to obtain an award in one of the two categories available in the contest: 1) Total Amount, which rewards the schools that collect the most PET during the competition; and 2) Per-Capita, which provides incentives to the schools that collect more PET bottles per student.

“In Coca-Cola FEMSA we are fully committed to the care and preservation of the environment. For this reason, we have a sustainability strategy formed by actions that aim to positively transform the communities in which we operate, like efficient waste management and recycling, which contributes to the mitigation of carbon emissions into the atmosphere and the improvement of the urban landscape of communities”, said the Director of Corporate Affairs of Coca-Cola FEMSA Mexico and Central America, Armando Leyva Mondragón.

To complement this project, Coca-Cola FEMSA has a recycling plant called Mexican Recycling Industry (IMER), which recycles PET bottles to generate the same material with alimentary grade for Mexico and Latin America.

One of Coca Cola FEMSA’s priority is to reduce the amount of the waste they generate, as well as promoting the culture of recycling and increasing the efficiency of the materials used in their processes. In 2014, the Zero Waste Plant program was launched, which establishes different actions to improve the environmental management of waste in the manufacturing operations of Coca-Cola FEMSA. The first plant to obtain this category was the Toluca Plant, and in 2015, Coatepec, Morelia, León, Cuautitlán, Reyes, Altamira and Ojuelos’s Plant also joined in.
