FEMSA-Luis Barragan House and Studio Stay Begins with “Fetishist Barragan” Exhibition

Mexico City, January 27th, 2016.– FEMSA and Luis Barragan House and Studio present their Stay, a new cultural and artistic platform that offers a contemporary dialogue with the historical context of the house, as well as the legacy of one of the most prominent architects of the twentieth century.

Eugenia Braniff and Patrick Charpenel will be in charge of carrying out the curatorial program of the project, which will consist of a series of exhibitions, interventions, performances, publications and academic and educational activities that will take place throughout 2016.

“This project will allow Luis Barragan House and Studio to explore new exhibition formats, with an emphasis on keeping the historic value of space intact, while inserting itself into new dialogues in the current cultural context”, said Luis Barragan House and Studio’s Director, Catalina Corcuera.

The first exhibition is called “Fetishist Barragan” and consists of a selection of works from FEMSA Collection, one of the most outstanding collections of modern and contemporary art in the continent. Curated by Willy Kautz, the exhibition has 24 works by distinguished artists such as Frida Kahlo, Gego, Francis Alÿs, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Eduardo Terrazas, Juan O’Gorman and Francisco Toledo, among others; as well as an unpublished creation by Mexican artist Jorge Satorre.

“We are proud to work with Luis Barragan House and Studio through this exhibition that will expand the cultural offer of the country. We are convinced that this initiative will allow us to strengthen ties between artists, curators and the general public, thus promoting the development and promotion of culture and art in our communities”, said FEMSA Cultural Program Manager, Rosa María Rodriguez Garza.

By presenting a selection of FEMSA Collection’s paintings, sculptures and photographs, “Fetishist Barragan” addresses the architecture of Luis Barragan House and Studio from its decorative objects. The pieces are arranged in areas of the house that make up the housing intimate space, the garden and the studio. The exhibition highlights the concept of fetish through its relationship with artifacts, religious elements, reflective spheres and pictorial works that have inhabited the house since Barragan himself made use of it, inviting the public to reflect on the symbolic nature of these items.

The exhibition will be open from January 28th to April 3th, 2016. If anyone wished to get more information, they can visit the website: www.estanciafemsa.mx. Those interested in attending and enjoying the exhibition must request access by appointment.
