FEMSA, INADEM, and Tecnologico de Monterrey promote Regional Development

Mexico City, 29 June 2015. –  The Ministry of Economy through the National Entrepreneurship Institute, Tecnologico de Monterrey, and Fomento Economico Mexicano S.A.B de C.V. (FEMSA) signed today a collaboration agreement to update the study of strategic sectors in Mexico.

The signatories of this agreement were Enrique Jacob Rocha, President of INADEM; Alejandro Poire, Dean of Tecnologico de Monterrey’s School of Government and Public Transformation; and Genaro Borrego, Director of Corporate Affairs at FEMSA.

INADEM’s President stressed the importance of having public policies that focus on the promotion of the economy with a precise emphasis on the most promising and dynamic activities where our country has an opportunity for specialization and the quality to compete globally. This is one of the conditions necessary to promote constant competitiveness and to sustain productivity growth as well as to implement a national economic development policy promoting an industrial development that includes sectorial and regional aspects and complies with the Law for the Promotion of a Sustainable Increase of Productivity and Competitiveness in the Nation’s Economy.

“Since the first stages of the government of Presidente Enrique Pena Nieto, INADEM has achieved the alignment of the policy that supports entrepreneurs and MSMEs with state and county governments throughout the country; looking to obtain greater economic benefits those in sectors and regions that agree with their respective vocations and specializations,” he added.

Alejandro Poire, Dean of Tecnologico de Monterrey’s School of Government and Public Transformation said, “This is another employment initiative carried out by Tecnologico de Monterrey, particularly by its School of Government and Public Transformation, with the goal of generating useful public assets for our country. From the point of view of Tecnologico de Monterrey, we aspire to contribute to the creation of an entrepreneurial spirit with a human sense. All our students and alumni should live in an environment in which we, as a university, provide knowledge that is useful in producing transformation.”

Mr. Poire also mentioned that this is an extraordinary opportunity where Tecnologico de Monterrey will contribute half of the financing needed to perform these activities of applied research. This research will specifically enable sharing all the experience of economists and political experts currently at its School of Government’s Institute for Regional Development with the decision makers from both the public and private sectors and thence be able to bring improved development to the strategic sectors in each state of Mexico.

Genaro Borrego, Director of Corporate Affairs at FEMSA, stated, “Supporting this research in alliance with INADEM and Tecnologico de Monterrey, strengthens the analysis of social and financial information on a regional scale, which is vital for the development of potentials in the strategic sectors of every state in Mexico. With this effort, FEMSA promotes the best use of the economic opportunities present in every state for the creation of enterprises, employment, and a better quality of life for Mexicans.”

The signature of this collaboration will update the study that Tecnologico de Monterrey carried out in March 2013. This study served as basis for the National Entrepreneurship Fund’s strategic focus of its support for entrepreneurs and MSMEs during 2013 and 2014, which was in complete alignment with the Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce, the Association of Economic Development Ministers of Mexico (AMSDE, for its acronym in Spanish,) and state and county governments.

This information update generated by INEGI’s Economic Census of 2014 will let us review together with the AMSDE, State Governments, the Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce, and the Agency of Economic productivity of the SHCP, the strategic sectors to promote in each of Mexico’s 32 States, beginning in 2016.

The work that INADEM – Tecnologico de Monterrey – FEMSA’s alliance will perform during this first stage will also enable the identification of strategic opportunities based not only on financial and social information, but also with the support of actors, experts, and entrepreneurs that represent the main economic activities in the States.

The study of Tecnologico de Monterrey’s Institute for Regional Development of the School of Government and Public Transformation will have a five-chapter structure: 1. Identification of Strategic Sectors, 2. Analysis of the Energy Sector per State, 3. Ranking of Activities according to their Greater Impact on Production and Employment, 4. Identification of the Companies in Strategic Sectors according to their Greater Impact on Production and Employment, and 5. Definition of Strategic Projects.

INADEM will issue the necessary invitations to regionals actors with the support of the States’ Ministries of Economic Development looking to maximize the participation of entrepreneurs in the study. Afterwards, it will coordinate meetings with State Governments, the Undersecretary of Industry and Commerce, and SHCP’s Agency for Economic Productivity in order to renovate the strategic alignment in favor of the country’s entrepreneurs and MSMEs.

FEMSA renews its collaboration with the public sector with its participation in this alliance that benefits the country’s entrepreneurs and MSMEs, providing 50% of the resources needed to carry out the study.

Also present during the signature of this agreement were Amado Villareal, Director of the Institute for Regional Development of Tecnologico de Monterrey’s School of Government and Public Transformation; Alfredo Sanchez, Co-chair of MUSEIC’s Sub-Committee of Innovation Clusters; Alejandro Gonzalez, General Coordinator of Strategic Planning, and the General Managers of INADEM.
