México, D.F., July 4, 2011.- The new Coca-Cola FEMSA bottling plant will be built in the mining town of Itabirito, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The choice of locality is attributed to technical factors such as logistics, infrastructure and local economic conditions as well as city management.
Investment in construction and deployment of the unit will be around US$ 146 million. The land where the bottling plant is located has a 300,000 square meter area and it is part of the industrial area of Itabirito.
The new plant will have an annual installed capacity of 2.1 billion liters in 2015, equivalent to close to a 47% increase, compared to the projected production in the region of Minas Gerais. All of Coca-Cola´s soft drink brands in all their existing presentations will be produced in the Itabirito plant to meet the Minas Gerais and Serrana Region of Rio de Janeiro market.
It is estimated that the construction period of the new bottling plant will take 18 months, generating around 500 jobs. Currently, Coca-Cola FEMSA’s headcount in Minas Gerais is about 3,500 people.
The new facility will incorporate concepts of sustainability in all of its construction and operational stages. Currently, Coca-Cola FEMSA in Belo Horizonte is at its maximum capacity and there is no space for new additions.
"Itabirito welcomes us with open arms and today is known for its entrepreneurial spirit," said Miguel Angel Peirano, director of Coca-Cola FEMSA’s Mercosur division. The alternative to expand business in Minas Gerais also had the support of the state government of that state.
According to Itabirito’s Mayor, Manoel da Mota, "the installation of the new Coca-Cola FEMSA bottling plant has enormous civic and historic value for the Itabirito city." "It came at the right time, because it represents diversification of our economy that depends on mining, which will run out someday." The Mayor also noted the investments made in professional training for locals, in order to employ workforce from the municipality. "We must prepare our people for them to be part of one of the largest beverage companies in the world," said Manoel da Mota.
