Coca-Cola FEMSA Renews its Vehicle Fleet in Mexico City

Mexico City, October 26th, 2016.- As part of its commitment to contribute to the preservation of the environment, Coca-Cola FEMSA renewed 226 distribution units from its vehicle fleet that were more than 15 years old, as well as converting 55 of its utility vehicles to compressed natural gas. Through these actions, the company achieved a reduction of 9.47 tons of CO2 per day in its operations in Mexico City.

The official presentation of the new fleet was attended by Miguel Ángel Mancera, Head of Mexico City’s Government, and by Tanya Müller, Head of Secretary of the Environment, who gave the official departure signal to the new trucks and utility vehicles, which add to the 32 electric vehicles that currently serve Mexico City’s Historical Center area.

Based on studies carried out by its transportation division, Coca-Cola FEMSA decided to modify the units used by vendors and turn them into green vehicles. Thus, 55 fuel utility vehicles were modified so that now they use compressed natural gas, and obtained a reduction of 20% of CO2 generated. Also, 270 catalytic converters were installed to maintain a better control and to achieve reduction in the generation of harmful gases expelled by the vehicle units.

“We are firmly committed to creating economic, social and environmental value in a sustainable way in the communities where we are present. In Mexico City specifically, we have focused our efforts on developing responsible initiatives and practices for the benefit of the environment. Proof of that, is the renewal of more than 25% of our delivery vehicle fleet only on the first stage of the process. Our transition to a cleaner vehicle fleet is a social commitment to face the important challenge of preserving the environment”, said the CEO of Coca-Cola FEMSA, Ernesto Silva Almaguer.

During his speech, the Head of Mexico City’s Government, Miguel Ángel Mancera, said: “Mexico City recognizes that the vehicle fleet being presented is 100% compliant with the self-regulation program stated by the Secretary of the Environment, to which 80 companies were convened. It is important to remember that some of the actions were agreed at the workshop “Reduction of Particulate Emissions in Diesel Vehicles, Alternatives for Mexico City”, held last September in the city.

Coca-Cola FEMSA is a company committed to the exploration and use of new technologies. As part of its commitment, today they also announced the start of tests for the use of biodiesel as an alternative fuel for the vehicle units. This initiative is being done with the support of the Mexican Institute of Petroleum, and will be punctually monitored to evaluate its implementation in the future. The constant training in theoretical, operative and road safety matters, as well as adequate working days, have allowed us to reach high levels of efficiency and for our drivers to achieve optimal driving skills. During this year, 645 operators have been trained to foster better driving habits to generate 3.5 less tons of carbon dioxide daily.

These efforts and initiatives have allowed us to obtain satisfactory results, such as the reduction of 9.47 tons of CO2 , and to have a new vehicle fleet that contributes significantly to reversing adverse environmental conditions.
