Merida, Mexico. November 26, 2014. - During the Best Practices seminar, OXXO from FEMSA Comercio (FEMCO), Coca-Cola FEMSA Argentina, and FEMSA Logística each received the award Best Practices in Corporate Social Responsibility 2014 bestowed by the Mexican Center of Philanthropy (CEMEFI).
FEMSA and its Business Units received the distinction of Corporate Social Responsibility due to the success achieved by the practices of the Edison Polygon Trust and Sustainable Mobility in Mexico and by the Zavaleta Intervention in Argentina.
“FEMSA looks to transform in a positive manner the communities neighboring its operations. It achieves it by the simultaneous creation of financial, social, and environmental value that ensures the business sustainability and that contributes to its positive transformation through a shared commitment and a convincing ethical leadership,” said Cordelia Portilla, Head of Social Responsibility at OXXO.
Coca-Cola FEMSA Argentina was acknowledged in the Intersectoral Partnerships for its program Zavaleta Intervention, which looks to provide fresh water services for homes, sewage, and storm drains as well as the restoration of the access plaza and the construction of a synthetic grass pitch for sports and recreation, thus improving the health and quality of life of the residents of the Transitional Housing Project Zavaleta, one of the poorest in the city of Buenos Aires. The project was developed together with the Ministry of Habitat and Inclusion of the City of Buenos Aires (SECHI) and the community.
OXXO won in the category Link with the Community with its program Edison Polygon. This effort began in the last months of 2011 with the motivation of providing means and tools to the community of 24,000+ people of eight neighborhoods around OXXO’s corporate offices in Monterrey, people with countless risk factors and scarce protection to solve the local issues and direct the community’s development. A trust oversees the Edison Polygon, guaranteeing the adequate use of the resources and the transparency of its management.
FEMSA Logística was victorious in the category Intersectoral Partnerships thanks to its Sustainable Mobility program, which consists of a Multidisciplinary Task Force from FEMSA’s Business Units coordinated by FEMSA Logística. The goal is to develop a strategic plan that allows for the best use of clean technologies and alternate fuels to supply the vehicular operations in a sustainable fashion, thus reducing the use of fossil fuels. This project involves government institutions, research centers, and domestic and foreign higher education institutions, performing an assessment of the fleet and a strategy for implementation.
