Manila, Philippines- In line with the International Year of Water Cooperation, FEMSA Foundation, the social investment arm of FEMSA, Coca-Cola FEMSA’s parent company, shared its knowledge and experiences in water stewardship across Latin America and the Caribbean during the week-long conference on water organized by the Asian Development Bank in their Manila headquarters.

Asia Water Week, which was held from 11-15 March 2013, brought together over 500 delegates from all over the world, and covered topics ranging from the latest technologies to key focus areas around the topic of water usage, as well as progress made by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) about the International Water Stewardship Standard. Participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas and learning experiences that could be applied in Asian contexts.

On behalf of FEMSA Foundation, Juan Dominguez, Director of Corporate Affairs for Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines, presented case studies in Latin America regarding collective actions to mitigate risks and achieve water sustainability. He also focused on the importance of the private sector in making significant advancements in water stewardship.

FEMSA Foundation is one of the founding members of the Initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS-LAC).

"We are honored to have this opportunity to share what we have learned in Latin America, and explore possibilities of applying some of our projects in Asia. We are still learning about Asia, and we are happy to share our commitment to sustainability and water stewardship,” said Juan Dominguez.

The AWS, which comprises world-class organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, The Pacific Institute and The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), began developing a certification known as the International Water Stewardship Standard (IWSS) in 2010. This initiative seeks to promote water stewardship through actions that will optimize water benefits for society, the environment and the global economy.

The initiative also includes the creation of an organization that will monitor compliance to the IWSS in order to recognize and encourage operators and large water users to work towards promoting a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable management program for water.

In January this year, Coca-Cola FEMSA completed the acquisition of 51% of Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines. This is the first expansion of Coca-Cola FEMSA outside of Latin America.
