FEMSA Logistics Becomes the First Mexican Company to be Certified in Road Safety

Mexico City, December 2, 2015.– FEMSA Logistics became the first Mexican logistics company to receive the ISO 39001 certification, an accreditation that evaluates the management system of road safety and that seeks to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries from traffic accidents.

To achieve the ISO 39001 certification, one of the biggest contributions of the decade in road safety according to the United Nations, FEMSA Logistics used ISO 9001 as a basis, since both share some requirements. In addition, the company worked in developing an integral safety system, which allowed them to structure its processes in each of its operating units, as well as the development of objectives and action plans that contemplate the requirements stipulated by the law.

The ISO 390001 certification stablishes a management framework focused on reducing, or even eliminating, the risk of accidents and injuries occurring in transport roads. With it, the company tries to stablish road safety goals and objectives, aimed at improving road designs, ideal transit routes by type of transport, and ideal periods for driving, as well as stablishing safe speed and movement conditions. All this, with the purpose of building a culture of safe and healthy environments.

Risk Prevention Manager, Francisco Carrera Becerra, said “This makes us the first national logistics company with an accreditation in road safety, and reaffirms our commitment of achieving customer satisfaction, through which we generate great social, economic and cultural value”.

Operations Director, Ramiro Delgado, also stated “In FEMSA we worry about the welfare of the people, which is why we seek that all our operations comply with the statutory regulations, and we are constantly searching for certifications that help road safety”.

The validation process to get the ISO 39001 certification consisted of several audits and training of the Risk Prevention and Quality Department collaborators, for the appreciation and interpretation of the standard, as well as two internal communication campaigns: one focused on political and safety goals, and another one to explain what the ISO 39001 was. After performing these actions, Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) finally gave the recommendation to give FEMSA Logistics the ISO 390001 certification and the ISO 9001, which the company has received for nine consecutive years.

Every year, on average, a mortality rate of 16,500 Mexicans due to road accidents is reported. With the implementation of ISO 39001, FEMSA Logistics expects a reduction of 25% in accident claims of Primary Distribution for 2020. To give support and continuity to this measure, the company provides training to all operators on road safety and operational, technical and personal development training.
